There are signs your friends are jealous of you.  This can hurt, I know! Sometimes, you have to take off the rose-colored glasses to see it so that you won’t have more problems in the future.

When friends are jealous

Being jealous is a negative state to be.  And when others are jealous of you, you might notice and just brush it off.  However, with friends, it’s different.  Friendship is a close, intimate relationship.  When friends are jealous of you, you might not notice it right away.  And when you do, it can feel like a real betrayal.  After all, aren’t good friends like your sisters?

Friends are jealous of you when they harbor resentment instead of joy when you experience happiness, success, and all the good things in life.  This is how jealousy works.

Most jealous people do not come right out and admit that they are envious of you, for whatever reason.  However, this resentment behavior, sometimes, even hostility, is how you know what’s really going on when your friends are jealous of you.

5 signs your friends are jealous of you

Jealous friends are the worst!  They are frenemies in disguise.  While it’s true that every relationship is different, it is advisable to pay attention to these signs to see if they apply to you and any of your friends:

  1. They’re not happy when you are happy.
  2. They don’t celebrate your success.
  3. They criticize you in public and private.
  4. They talk negatively about you to others.
  5. They minimize your best qualities and achievements.

What to do when friends are jealous of you

Communication is the key to any good, healthy relationship.  Talk with your friend and ask her why she is doing what she is doing.  Then, you can explain the negative impact that her behavior has when you spend time together.  Decide if this is a friendship that can and should be saved.  Or not.

Sometimes, you have to go deeper and think more about what you want, what you need, and the boundaries you create or fail to create with your friends.

Think about how you became friends.  Who chose who? What is the relationship dynamic?  Are you equals or is one person more “in charge”? Try this, too:

  1. Look at your friends and ask if they are truly your friends.  For example, are they giving back the love and consideration that you give to them?
  2. Continue to be your unique self.
  3. Gain confidence and self-esteem so that you are not constantly looking for outside validation.
  4. Get new friends!  Your sisterhood tribe is there- you just need to find it.
  5. Move on.   When friends are jealous of you, don’t engage in the behavior with them.
