What is Grannynomics? Grannynomics are 12 values-based propositions identified by Sisterhood Agenda Global Partner, BIG (Blacks in Green), founder Naomi Davis.
It is the traditional concept of the African village brought to an eco-friendly, sustainable, modern lifestyle.
Inspired by Grandma
Inspired by Naomi’s grandmother, Grannynomics are a mixture of common sense, good parenting, social etiquette, personal self-development, economic sustainability, empowerment, and holistic health.
“In my life, values were derived from the economic soul of my own grandmother’s home and business management,” Naomi says.
“She was Adelia Thompson Siggers of Minter City, Mississippi, a sharecropper’s wife. By understanding her operating system—the one in which my mother, and I, in turn, were raised—I’ve been able to begin distinguishing whole-system solutions which once operated sustainably in our urban villages.”
The handbook
BIG publishes the Grannynomics handbook found HERE as an important resource.
This is how communities made a way when there did not seemn to be a way; they grew food, started businesses, and kept money flowing.
The Grannynomics Handbook is intended to:
“Provide residents, community organizers, nonprofits, local government officials, and anyone interested in sustainable living with the tools and resources needed to transform your community into a sustainable square mile.”

The values
A bit of intuition, some common sense, and a lot of Ancestral wisdom:
EVERYONE MUST WORK. Even the lilies of the field must draw water and harvest sun.
- ALL YOUNGSTERS LEARN A TRADE. By age 10, every child is an apprentice.
- CASH IS OFTEN OPTIONAL. Grow your own food. Make your own clothes.
- PAY AS YOU GO. Use the catalog to dream big. Spend small, and appreciate your possessions.
CONTINUE TO IMPROVE. Whether raising hogs or competing in a spelling bee, be your best.
EARN RESPECT. Trade in the Golden Rule.
- DEFINE AND REGULATE YOURSELF. Your spouse’s boss’ wife cannot tell you what to do.
BE COURTEOUS, HONEST AND PROUD. You can be certain your Creator and others are watching.
CLOTHE, FEED, EDUCATE AND RESTRAIN YOUR CHILDREN AND YOURSELF. Adopt others’ children if they can’t.
KEEP YOURSELF AND YOUR THINGS BEAUTIFUL AND NEAT. Even your laundry on the line should shine.
EAT WELL AND REST. Take care of the goose that lays the golden eggs. Enjoy featherbeds and whole grains.
SURROUND YOURSELF WITH FLOWERS. Chicken poop makes great fertilizer.
