Happiness- the state of being happy.

Being happy or achieving happiness is something that too few people enjoy. Not everyone has the same “type” of happiness.  One person’s is not the same as the next person.  For example, I may be happiest when playing soccer and you may be happiest reading a book.

The question is, “What makes YOU happy”?

How do I know I am happy?

I know that I am happy when I have this feeling in my gut.  It’s kind of ticklish, in all honesty.  I just can’t stop smiling because it is genuine. But that’s for me. I cannot try to tell you how you know when you’re happy. That is a personal adventure that you would have to experience through your own emotions.

What I will say is to try new things. Try new foods and go to new places. See what makes you smile, whether it’s doing an activity or  going somewhere. That is up to you.

In that way, you determine your own happiness.

Can a person make me happy?

Of course, that is something that a lot of people experience. But that is not always a good or healthy thing.

Someone special once told me:

“You should not rely on someone to give that spark of happiness, for when that spark is gone, what are you left with?”

The meaning behind this quote is that relying on a person for your happiness is not healthy. Because when that person is not delivering what you rely on them for, then your whole mood may change. When they’re down, then you’re down.  When they are gone, you may not know what to do or how to feel.

At the end of the day, you cannot rely on another person for your own happiness. Relying on another person for your own happiness can be the reason why you lose that happiness.

Look deeper

Read more about happiness and explore what being happy looks and feels like to you.  You may be surprised.  Try reading The Art of Happiness by His Holiness the Dalai Lama and other books too.  Watch movies about happy people and surround yourself with people who are also happy.  Some people say it’s contagious.
