Many people enjoy solitude without being lonely. Does this describe you?

Not everyone alone is lonely.

Loneliness explained

Loneliness is an epidemic in the U.S. and other places around the world.  Loneliness happens when your need for social interaction is not met, causing you to feel isolated and alone.  In its extreme, loneliness leads to depression.

It is common to feel lonely if:

The power of one

You, by yourself, on your own, are amazing. While social support and interaction can be very uplifting, so can being alone and enjoying your own company.

Having healthy self-esteem and knowing your self-worth is key when it comes to learning how to enjoy solitude without being lonely. When you learn to love your “me” time, it is very rewarding.

When you enjoy solitude without being lonely, you increase your self-awareness, emotional intelligence, independence, and resilience.

In this way, your solitude can help you in all aspects of your life.

Planned solitude

The best way to start to enjoy your special time with yourself is to schedule it, just like you plan other activities that are important to you.  If you suddenly find yourself by yourself, embrace it as the opportunity that it is.

The amount of time that you feel comfortable with spending time alone is dependent on a lot of factors, such as your:

  • Personal history
  • Living circumstances
  • Quality of relationships
  • History of trauma
  • Personality

Not everyone will understand your desire or need to be by yourself.  This is understandable.  However, most of us require this time-out regularly, whether we realize it or not.

This is the difference between being alone and being lonely-that is the power inherent in the word “solitude.”

Solitude activities

There are an endless number of activities that you can do to enjoy solitude without being lonely. For example, you can do any of the following:

  1. Meditate.
  2. Chill out.
  3. Read.
  4. Self-care.
  5. Exercise.
  6. Sleep.
  7. Hobbies.
  8. Journal.
  9. Daydream.
  10. Creative visualization.
  11. Affirmations.
  12. Pray.
  13. Plan.
  14. Manifest.
  15. Feel your feelings.

Celebrity example

While reflecting on the past year, actress and talk show host, Tia Mowry, wrote about her vulnerabilities in never being alone before and importantly, acknowledged the powerful act of spending time alone.  Tia Mowry shared:

“I have a confession to make: I’ve never been alone. Until now,” she wrote. “For the longest time, I’ve found myself in the company of others, as my work and family commitments kept me constantly surrounded by people, and not to mention, I have a twin. Alone time was a rare occurrence growing up.”

Although she’s alone, Mowry says that she has “embraced solitude” and found beauty through it all.

“I realized that being alone wasn’t a punishment but rather an opportunity to recharge.” Tia Mowry

“Through conscious effort, I transformed these moments into a crucial aspect of maintaining my well-being. This shift allowed me to recognize the value of solitude in refreshing my mind and spirit.”

Did you see that transformation?  It’s amazing how we continue to elevate common experiences and evolve in life.  Instead of being panicked and fearful, we can embrace this challenge with knowledge and joy.

When you have yourself, you are never alone.
