As spring has sprung and summer is approaching the first thing that comes to my mind are ways to protect my natural hair from becoming damaged.

Over the years, a lot of my friends have struggled with the transition from relaxed hair to natural, and always feel the need to get it relaxed in order to maintain it during the summer months. Some of them have even got tired of trying to just deal with it overall, and decided it was best to just relax it. But one question they have all asked me was, “How have you been able to do it for so long?”

My answer is always this:  1) consistency in the products that you use and 2) the patience to maintain it. Most of the products that I use and I am consistent with can be found at your local grocery store or inside your refrigerator. Other ways to maintain your natural hair are through the use of protective hairstyles such as braids, sew-ins and updo’s, as well as keeping your scalp clean and deep conditioned.

However, not everyone may need a deep conditioning.  It depends on you and your natural hair. Some people may have to do it at least once a week, while others condition their hair twice a week or every two weeks.

Lastly, keeping your ends trimmed (when needed) is another great way in helping to promote healthy protective hair all year long.
