- The Addictive Nature of Social Media - September 9, 2022
Sisterhood Agenda is concerned about the addictive nature of social media, especially for our girls. We can examine the addictive nature of social media when we begin to understand what social media is and what it does.
Some background about the addictive nature of social media
Social media is a place where people connect with other people and share pictures with other people.
Social media makes it easier to post videos and pictures and a lot of people do this to try to make themselves more popular. Social media is also easy to access for young people, even easier than it was before.
Social media also allows you to stay up-to-date with your friends’ life and stay in close contact with them. Using social media, you can find old friends and long-lost friends and family.
Social media allows you to share happy moments of your life so that your friends can see what you have been up to. Social media allows you to meet and interact with more people than you would meet and interact with in real life.
Trying to stay current and informed reinforces the addictive nature of social media
Social media will keep you up-to-date with what’s new in global news, sports, the weather, and, of course, your favorite celebrities.
Social media also can be a place to learn about more mental issues and bring awareness to them. But how often do you need to check these things? Do they really require instant notifications?
Each site has its own agenda.
Sometimes, social media can be a dangerous place because there are a lot of dangerous people on all social media platforms. It can be very depressing and extremely violent.
The addictive nature of social media makes competition for popularity seem normal
While trying to stay updated with current events is not a bad thing, there is also danger, violence, and intense competition with social media.
Many people use social media to get popular, it’s like a huge, never-ending popularity contest; whoever has the most followers or views gets the most fame and glory.
Some people throw parties for their fanbase and they try to have the most insane parties. Social media influencers also try to compete against each other to see who can have the most talked about parties.
When you unpeel the layers, you will see more clearly what is there and what other people are really all about.
The addictive nature of social media makes users forget to do the most basic things
The addictive nature of social media is a major downside.
Drama is also one of the addictive things that people love on social media; it creates a toxic social situation.
Some people can be on it for hours and forget to drink, eat, do our work, complete our chores, and monitor our mental health, especially little kids. Social media can expose you to certain things at a young age, such as inappropriate content, that not everyone should see at a young age. Kids are now so addicted to phones and social media that they have mental breakdowns because their parents took their phones or laptops from them. Kids are easier to get addicted to social media than adults because their brain is still growing and they become so addicted to their phones that they feel like they need that phone to live.
Let’s become more aware of social media so that we can stay grounded, healthy, and in control of our lives. Do you agree or disagree? Comment below.
