The Sustainable Garden-NEW Project!

Sisterhood Agenda The Sustainable Garden Project
Sisterhood Agenda

The goal of The Sustainable Garden project is for Sisterhood Agenda to create a sustainable flower and vegetable community garden that is maintained from rainwater collection.

The Sustainable Garden project site, PARKS, is a Sisterhood Agenda holistic housing development on several acres of land that provides green spaces, safe, and eco-friendly housing to the women and their families. There is plenty of space to choose appropriate sun, soil, and proper irrigation areas for the garden to plant at least 50 plants. It will have walkable paths and include vertical growing strategies for easy harvesting, land conservation, and visual appeal.

Consistent with the concept of holistic housing, The Sustainable Garden project promotes wellness and joy by encouraging outdoor time, exercise, inspiration, relaxation, healthy homegrown food, fragrant blooms, and a sense of well-being and accomplishment, in addition to food for subsistence.

Sisterhood Agenda presented the plan at our Giveaway and Sustainable Garden Expo on July 15, 2023.  The day was a huge success!

Using the farmer’s almanac as a planting guide for when to plant, they are encouraged to grow large-seeded, fast-growing native plants such as those that contribute to a butterfly garden, as designed by local horticulturist Heather Andrew:

BUTTERFLY:  Sisterhood Agenda Sustainable Garden

Through this project, we are also encouraged to consider the healing properties of color, for example, a rainbow garden. Harmonious growth, low-maintenance, enthusiasm, and fun are encouraged to create a garden that is inviting, creative, and full of imagination, rather than one that idolizes rigid control or perfection.

The garden is irrigated primarily by rainwater for naturally soft and chemical-free water. Rain barrels require no special plumbing or installation expertise. Harvesting rainwater is an ancient sustainability tradition practiced by our ancestors that is eco-friendly and free, conserving both water and energy. This is especially important when have been experiencing more heat waves and droughts due to climate change.
