This year is our year, another 365 days to celebrate International Women’s Day. At Sisterhood Agenda, we know the work that we have been doing, not just this year, but for the last 20-plus years, has been empowering women and girls, increasing consciousness, and transforming lives through sisterhood.

How are sisterhood and social isolation related? Many of us are increasingly lonely souls, yearning for companionship. The feeling, over a period of time, creates social isolation. When there is sisterhood, you are never alone. Sisterhood is the key to overcoming social isolation, particularly for marginalized women and those fighting for social change through activism.

Men and women’s empowerment? Yes! Men can support women’s empowerment movements. Rather than shun their participation, we encourage it. Since women and girls are often harassed and abused by men in power, it is helpful when men to step up and have our backs.

Trauma can spark activism, turning something painful and bad into something helpful and good.
Trauma hurts. Trauma can cause pain, anger (even rage), depression, and self-harm. Importantly, trauma can spark activism because trauma can transform victims into survivors. More often than not, survivors of traumatic experiences have stories to tell and lessons to teach.

The movie, Black Panther, demonstrates these concepts beautifully.
As we push toward progressive, positive social change, labels and status-quo norms are challenged. Some find this change frightening while others welcome it and push it even further.

As more actresses and women in media are coming forward to reveal how they, too (#MeToo) have been sexually harassed, even raped, by Harvey Weinstein and other powerful men in Hollywood, our society is becoming more conscious about how insidious and institutionalized this form of abuse really is.
