Connection not competition, is the way to true women’s empowerment.
Women’s empowerment is often discussed in terms of breaking barriers, achieving leadership positions, and shattering glass ceilings.
However, one of the most transformative and underrated aspects of empowerment is the shift from competition to connection.
From a young age, many girls are socialized to view other women as competitors. This is not a natural impulse but one rooted in the scarcity mentality, often called the “crab-in-the-bucket” mentality. In this mindset, one woman’s success is seen as a threat to another’s, leading to unhealthy comparisons and rivalry. The idea that there is only room for one woman at the top fosters an environment where self-worth is determined by how well one can outperform or outshine others. This is a “pick me” trap. Don’t fall for it!
I remember a time early in my career when I found myself trapped in this mentality. I was at a women’s networking event, surrounded by talented women, each with their own unique expertise. Instead of celebrating the diversity of skills in the room, I found myself sizing everyone up, wondering if they were “ahead” of me or “better” than me. It wasn’t until one of the women in the group opened up about her struggles and offered me advice that I realized how much we could accomplish together. She didn’t view me as competition, but as someone with whom she could share knowledge, encouragement, and support. It was a lightbulb moment for me, and from that day on, I consciously shifted my mindset from competition to connection.
Women’s empowerment is not a competition but a journey of mutual support, collaboration, and shared success.
When women learn to relate to each other as allies rather than adversaries, they tap into the immense power of connection.
This is where true authenticity comes into play, being able to show up as your full, unapologetic self and encouraging other women to do the same.
It’s about recognizing that when one woman wins, we should all win. By lifting each other up, we multiply our collective potential.
Authentic empowerment is rooted in the realization that we are stronger together and acting consistently with this belief and intention. It’s about creating a space where every woman is valued, where our individual strengths contribute to the greater good.
This mindset fosters an environment where we can support each other’s dreams, share resources, and celebrate each other’s success without fear or jealousy.
This is the foundation of real equity for women and girls, advocacy and support for one another, without the constraints of competition.
Ultimately, true empowerment comes from breaking the barriers of competition and embracing the limitless possibilities that arise when women connect, collaborate, and rise together. By shifting our mindset, we not only change the narrative for ourselves but also pave the way for future generations to live in a world where women’s strength is measured by how much they help each other grow.
