Parasocial relationships are like all-consuming celebrity crushes.

A parasocial relationship is a one-sided, non-reciprocal emotional bond that a person forms with a public figure, such as a celebrity, fictional character, or online influencer. The individual feels a sense of intimacy and connection, like they know the person, even though there is no actual relationship or acknowledgment from the public figure. These relationships can be relatively harmless, but they can also become unhealthy if they are intense or interfere with a person’s daily life.

What is a parasocial relationship?

Some believe that parasocial relationships are more like “celebrity worship.”

They are, above all, emotionally fueled and driven perceived connections.  Famous actors, celebrities, fictional characters, animated characters, and morerecently, social media influencers, can allbe targets in parasocial relationships.

Examples include a high school student feeling like Taylor Swift is a close friend after following her career and social media posts, or a dedicated fan of a YouTuber who feels like they know the creator very personally, although they have never spoken or interacted one-on-one.

What makes someone create a parasocial relationship?

These types of relationships are usually intense and provide a comforting sense of friendship, belonging, and community.  Often motivated by feelings of fun, personal enjoyment, and recreation, they can also involve inspirational figures that people most want to be like.

The targets of parasocial relationships foster feelings of attraction and attachment.

They have a consistent presence, especially with technology, usually daily.

How can a parasocial relationship be unhealthy?

Because a parasocial relationship is, by definition, one-sided, intense, and primarily sustained through online daily interaction, it can be addictive.

An imaginary, made-up situationship, it feels so real and serious, even though the two people have never actually met.

It is a media-produced illusion of a relationship, which  is why it can lead to mental disorders and even pathological behavior that include:

  • Social media addiction
  • Avoidance and/or denial of reality
  • Psychological absorption
  • Obsessive-compulsive thinking
  • Loss of personal identity
  • Loss of emotional stability
  • Lack of critical thinking skills
  • One-sided, emotional decision-making
  • Loneliness
  • Depression
  • Social anxiety
  • Boundary violations
  • Inappropriate behavior

It’s hard loving someone who does not love you back.

Cognitive behavioral therapy can address this specific type of dysfunctional and unhealthy relationship attachment style. With time and patience, parasocial relationships, like obsessive compulsive disorders and addictions, can be overcome.
