Kamala Harris: What You May Not Know About the U.S. Presidential Candidate

Kamala Harris, the current Vice President of the United States, is a popular U.S. politician, campaigning to be the first woman President of the United States (POTUS).

Here are some facts about Vice President that you may not know.

  • Kamala Harris’s first name, pronounced “comma-la,” means “lotus” in Sanskrit.
  • Ms. Harris’ middle name is Devi, a Sanskrit word meaning “goddess.”  Devi is given to young Indian girls to honor their gender and empower them with feminine grace and excellence.

The name Devi evokes supreme feminine divine power.

  • Kamala Harris is the first African American, first woman, and first Asian American to become the attorney general of California.
  • Ms. Harris is the first Indian American and second African American woman to serve as a senator.
  • Ms. Harris is the first African American woman to represent California in the Senate.
  • Ms. Harris is 5′ 4″ tall.
  • She has a sister, Maya Harris.
  • Born in Oakland, California, Kamala Harris graduated from Westmount High School in Quebec, Canada.
  • Kamala Harris is the author of the following books:  The Truths We Hold: An American Journey, Superheroes Are Everywhere, and Smart on Crime.
  • Ms. Harris worked at McDonald’s during her first two years at Howard University.
  • On weekends at Howard University, Ms. Harris also protested apartheid in South Africa at the National Mall in Washington, DC.
  • She cracked down on teenage prostitution in the city, reorienting law enforcement’s approach to stop prosecuting young girls for prostitution — acknowledging that they were victims who needed treatment for trauma and not criminals who needed to be incarcerated.
  • Ms. Harris has consistently identified as a Black girl and Black woman, writing in her memoir, “My mother understood very well that she was raising two Black daughters. And she was determined to make sure we would grow into confident, proud Black women.”
