Are there only 3 types of men? According to a new University of British Columbia study, yes, there are only 3 types of men.
It seems unbelievable, of course, given what we know about gender norms, socialization, stereotypes, and gender fluidity.
Why only 3 types of men? This study looked at 92 heterosexual men ages19 to 43 years old to come up with what they call 3 new male or “masculine” archetypes.
Type 1: Neo-traditionalist
The neo-traditionalist man mostly sticks to traditional gender roles. They often see themselves in the roles of providers and protectors in their relationships. They believe in established norms, making them the proverbial torchbearers of historical gender dynamics.
Type 2: Egalitarian
The egalitarian man seeks relationships defined by balance and equality. They emphasize mutuality, measurable give-and-take and strive for shared responsibilities. However, while they aim for balanced relationship dynamics, the study found that some egalitarian-styled men find it difficult to actualize realize gender equality, especially in tasks like domestic chores.
Type 3: Progressive
The progressive man likes to discuss gender equity within their relationships, including roles and responsibilities, even more so than egalitarian men. Significantly, such men are not just passive supporters but active promoters of gender equity and social justice. Their proactive stance often leads to enhanced mental well-being.
Men and gender equality
Of course, not all men can fit into just these 3 types of men. In fact, some may start as one type and evolve into another. Plus, do we really know what men do in their private lives?
The scientists found that men face social problems and mental health difficulties, including criticism, stigma, and isolation when they challenge gender equity ideals. In other words, the neo-traditionalist men are becoming more obsolete, frustrated, and alienated; their numbers are shrinking, and they are being left behind.
Younger generations of men are most likely to challenge old gender stereotypes. Their thoughts about gender equality may be more like the last 2 types of men than the other 3 types of men.
Perhaps 3 types of men is just the beginning of something big that is beginning to happen.
Maybe men are coming together and help each other see the light.
