Most mothers want to be a “Good Mom,” but how do you really become one?
Motherhood is an awesome journey, albeit a colorful one. It is not easy. There are times that you just want one moment of peace and silence all to yourself. But when that happens, you may find that you long for your child’s presence…
I know moms questions themselves every night, have I been a good mom today? Would my child hate me for what I did? Did my child like the lunch that I prepared?
Children seek approval from parents, we know, but little did we know we also seek approval from them. We want them to be happy and satisfied with what we give to them.
We love our children the best way we can.
In this article, we’re going to talk about ways on how to become a good mom. I know it may sound cliche and like an impossible task. However, if you follow these bits of advice, you might accomplish it.
1. A good mom doesn’t compare herself to other moms.
“My friend Susan makes better sandwich hearts and cute bento meals. I’m not that creative.”
Girl, don’t do this to yourself!
No two mothers are alike. We have our own parenting styles.
That other parent might be a very creative one but you’re the master of homework and your child listens to you.
Our worst critic is ourselves. Stop telling yourself that other moms are better than you. If you can’t cook or make bento meals, that’s fine. That won’t make you less of a mother.
2. Small moments create big memories.
Kids’ attention is often scattered, so they won’t always remember or appreciate the fact that you throw them a huge birthday party, but they will likely remember the simple special gift you bought that they love.
They enjoy the simple things in life so don’t try to overdo it.
3. Communicate with your child.
A good mom communicates with her child. This means being involved in their interest and it starts early before they’ve even uttered a word yet.
Spend time with them, read books for them. For early adolescents, try to be in their world, for example, play video games with them and listen to their music.
Establish open communication with your child at an early age so that he or she won’t be shy talking to you about problems or issues.
Having open communication also gives you an insight into the personality of your child.
Do this and by the time he or she is a young adult, it wouldn’t be weird that you are checking out his or her hobbies and friends.
4. A good mom has regular dates with her children, individually.
Every individual has a need to feel important and this includes every child.
The sure-fire way to make your child or children feel valued is to go on a date with them individually.
It doesn’t have to be fancy, maybe go to the park or your child’s favorite ice cream shop. Set some time aside to talk to your child because being with them alone gives them the opportunity to tell you things about his or her life.
Even if you have five kids, this step is very important.
5. Believe in your child.
When you were younger, or maybe now that you’re a mother, you might have expectations about your child, like how you want them to excel in school or become a professional athlete.
Even if your children do not meet your expectations, support them throughout. Don’t take it out on your child if he or she doesn’t excel in certain areas.
Don’t force her to be someone she’s not.
6. Allow your child to experience failure.
It’s important that you should be there when your child makes mistakes so your child knows he can turn to you. But letting them experience failure on their own once in a while teaches them a valuable lesson about resilience.
It is a crucial life skill that he could use all the way into adulthood.
It’s difficult to do, but try to stop correcting the mistakes of your child, stop giving them advice, and let them figure it out on their own.
They will never learn how to live life and fix their own mess if you will always be there to do it.
Parenting is like teaching them how to build a boat: you don’t build it for them. That boat will be their cruiseship into adulthood, into storms and hurricanes, and lovely sunsets, too.
You are molding your child’s character and when they’re old enough, they’ll sail into that boat! You just hope that they remember everything you taught them and they come back safely.
It will make you proud that you’ve created a strong and kind individual.
7. Discipline objectively.
Make sure that your punishment fits your child’s mistake.
There are different methods of discipline on kids depending on their age.
If the child is a young adult, you can ask him or her what the punishment should be.
If the child is a little younger, they’re too young to comprehend punishment. You should thoroughly explain why you’re doing what you are doing.
8. A good mom takes care of herself.
Self-care is essential to a mom’s role. You can never give your best if you are not your best self.
Take time to go to the doctor and take care of your health. I mean, how will you take care of your children if you are always sick?
Take time to work out and meditate for a healthy mind. Being a mother could be stressful: you plan everything, you cook, you clean, and you arrange schedules.
Make sure you’re head is in the right place. If you feel stressed, take the time out for yourself. Have some me-time!
You will be able to give love when you have love to give.
