Finding Strength in Vulnerability

Sisterhood Agenda Finding Strength in Vulnerability
Angela D. Coleman

Vulnerability is a strength, not a weakness.

Vulnerability is often misunderstood. Many of us think it’s a weakness, something to avoid at all costs. But in truth:

Vulnerability is one of the greatest strengths we have.

It’s what allows us to face uncertainty, connect authentically with others, and grow through life’s challenges.

Why Vulnerability Feels Risky

When we are vulnerable, we open ourselves to the possibility of great things but also disappointment, rejection, and failure. That can feel uncomfortable and even scary. Fear often convinces us that hiding or controlling everything will keep us safe. But, it’s not true. Blocking vulnerability can also work against us.

Avoiding vulnerability can block the things that make life worth living:  growth, joy, and connection.

In addition, the very act of leaning into uncertainty can help us build resilience.

Strength Comes from Openness

Being vulnerable doesn’t mean oversharing or losing control. It means acknowledging your feelings, embracing imperfection, and allowing yourself to be fully present. When you practice this, amazing things happen:

  • You build emotional courage by allowing yourself to feel and express your feelings deeply.

  • You create more long-term, authentic relationships.

  • You develop greater self-awareness about who you are and what makes you happy.

  • You discover how truly humane, adaptable, and resourceful you are.

How to Practice Strength Through Vulnerability

  1. Notice your fear without judgment. Recognize what you are feeling, and allow yourself to sit with it.

  2. Shift your perspective. Instead of focusing on bringing back the past, ask yourself, “What can this new experience teach me?”

  3. Instead of protecting yourself from everybody, share selectively and meaningfully. Open up to those you trust.

  4. Celebrate small acts of courage. Each time you lean into vulnerability, congratulate yourself as you grow stronger.

  5. Make a deliberate effort. Vulnerability is strongest when it’s intentional.
